One of the things that came to the fore via the internet after 9/11 was a deep strain of anti-Jewish sentiment that seems to pervade universities and various intelligencia in Europe and here.

A lot of this "anti-zionist" feeling expressed itself in terms of alleged conspiracies involving "neocons" and other Jewish cabals supposedly controlling America and its government. Another aspect was a melange of myths and bad history, which stank up the forums as in this statement by XD:

Quote:
"Israel was primarily a British/ European/US creation in a conquered Arabian land, divided up without regard to ethnicity or the wishes of the native population, created for the purpose of fulfilling Christian beliefs regarding land and the biblical necessity of a Palestinian homeland for the Jews."

On Oct 17, 2006 I posted this response to XD's statement:

The facts speak otherwise. The partition of Palestine by the U.N. in 1947 made "official" (in the sense of an agreement established by a two-thirds majority of voting nations) a process that had been going on since the 19th century, during the twilight of the Ottoman Empire, when Jewish Zionists began acquiring tracts of land in sparsely populated Palestine by purchasing and developing it peacefully.

But recognition of the State of Israel by the U.N. (a recognition that didn't include the British, who abstained and refused to cooperate in its implementation) wasn't the true beginning for the State of Israel. Immediately after the U.N. partition passed, the Arab tribes and nations launched a bloody war against Israel, which lasted until 1949 and in which the Arabs were soundly defeated by the Israelis.

This war enlarged and defined the boundaries of Israel and was the defining event that established the State of Israel.

Arabs have long believed in war, and over the centuries have themselves used warfare as an instrument of conquering and holding territory. They just don't like it when somebody else does the same -- especially the much-hated Jews, in a war that the Arabs themselves initiated for the purpose of eradicating the Jews and confiscating the lands they had legally purchased and so arduously developed.

More factual material is found in Wikipedia, with many links. These articles are fairly accurate with some exception here and there.

Beyond these simple investigations, I recommend that people, with minds open, enlarge their pool of knowledge by reading history books -- rather than simply blasting uninformed & received opinions from their overactive rear-ends.

Confused
cheers,

Elias
